This story really defines creepiness and how a seemly normal community has an literally underground magical problem. Mackie is a replacement child in which the fairy (the author doesn’t specifically use that term) switch out a human baby for one of theirs, one mostly likely to die. I feel in love with Mackie and how his family loves him even though he is not really theirs. His sister Emma states that she decided to care for him by saying “I choose to care for you” and I am paraphrasing here. I really hope that this will be made into a series since I am still thinking about the characters. You will probably love this one if you enjoy Holly Black.
