BANNED BOOK GIVEAWAY HOP!

September 21, 2013 By Mary

Banned Book Week Giveaway Hop!

The week of 9.22.13 through 9.28.13 is set aside to bring notice to a growing trend in public and school libraries — pulling literature from circulation based on the actions of a few, not the majority of the public.  Since 1982, the American Library Association has put together campaigns to make everyone aware of the circumstances of this form of censorship.  Some of the books banned are for minor issues like language that was once accepted but is now objectionable.  Instead of personal responsibility, these censors wish to impose their beliefs on everyone.  You can read more about this important week at the BANNED BOOK WEEK site.

I don’t believe in censorship of any media.  I think it is a parents’ place to make sure their children are consuming appropriate materials.  I don’t want someone else telling me what is right for my child, nor do I want to tell anyone what is acceptable for their family.  I let my son read, watch, listen to anything he wanted with a few important guidelines in place.  I reviewed and discussed with him the media he was consuming.  He turned out more advanced, making better choices and incredibly responsible for those decisions.

I agree that it is the parents place to check what their child is watching/reading but I do think that some common sense on part of those in charge is necessary. Some children don’t have parents who care what their children are exposed to. So for instance, I do think that a librarian should ask the permission of a parent if an 11 year old child wants to check out Fifty Shades of Grey. I’m not saying Fifty Shades of Grey should be banned from the library but a librarian should be able to restrict this book to children of certain ages.

I also agree. Censorship is just plain WRONG. If you don’t want your kids reading something you discuss it with them and go form there. No institution should dictate what we can and cannot read.

China censors what the people read, right? Great idea to ban books, huh? What better way to make people want to read them!?

I do not censor anything from my children, as I’d rather that they learn from me guiding them than for them to learn from another on the school bus or at school (which they will for sure). We discuss what is appropriate and what is not, and then they grow into their own from there. Thanks for the giveaway!

Too often books are considered “not appropriate for the age level.” Do people realize what kids are going through in real life? It’s so easy to put our heads in the sand and forget that real life is happening whether we want it to or not.

I borrowed this book from the library last year, and it is now easily in my top 10 books I’ve ever read. Yes, it is unsettling, but that’s the whole freakin idea! Bullying and sex and suicide happen all the time, and this is one of many books trying to shed some light on these major issues. We have to acknowledge that kids actually go through these kinds of situations before we can ever do anything about it.

I remember reading this book about 6 years ago during my sophomore year of high school. My history/english teacher recommended it for me to read and so I checked it out from the school library. It was an amazing book! To be listed as a banned book, I just feel like it was cheated.
