Excerpt: Bookstore Kiss Scene
Anna works in her parent’s bookstore. In this scene, Bennett visits her there one evening, against his better judgment.

“The point is that I’m not supposed to be here, Anna. Not in Evanston. Not in 1995. I’m not supposed to know you, or Emma, or Maggie. I’m not supposed to go to this school, or do this homework, or hang out in your coffeehouse.” He takes my hands in his like he’s about to transport me somewhere, but we don’t leave the room— we just move a lot closer to each other. “I don’t stay anywhere. I visit. I observe. I leave. I don’t ever stay.”
I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with this information. Tell him to leave? Tell him to stay? But I don’t have time to consider any other alternatives, because he scoots in closer and brings his hands to my face, and I fall back into the bookcase as he kisses me with this intensity— like he wants to be here, and if he kisses me just long enough, deeply enough, none of what he just said will actually be true. And as much as I know it’s all true and that it’s incredibly stupid to feel this way about someone who doesn’t belong here— who, when he leaves, will hardly be a plane ride away— my hands leave the Berber carpet, find his back, and pull him toward me until I’m flat against the shelves. Because he’s here now. And because I’m pretty certain I don’t want this to stop. Ever.

I stare down at the shelf marked with the word mexico, remembering the night I came in here last April.
I should have been studying, but couldn’t stop thinking about her. All day, I’d been looking for a chance to get her alone so I could tell her the second part of my secret, but I never found one. So before I could change my mind, I fed my arms into the sleeves of my jacket and walked to the bookstore.
Her face completely lit up when she saw me walk in, and all I wanted to do was kiss her. Instead, I told her I was there to pick up a book on Mexico. She led me over here to the Travel section.
At first, we talked about our assignment, but then she stopped me midsentence and said, “I want to hear the rest of the second thing.” When I looked in her eyes, I knew she meant it. And so I told her everything. That I was born in 1995. That I’m seventeen in 2012. That I wasn’t supposed to be here. That I could visit, but I couldn’t stay.

And then, against my better judgment, I finally did what I’d wanted to do since the day I met her. I came up on my knees and I kissed her, no longer caring about my rules or where and when I was supposed to be. Just as I was about to pull away like I knew I should, I felt her hands on my back, drawing me in until we were pressed against the bookcase and there was nowhere else for us to go but closer to each other. I kissed her harder.

1. Do you have a secret talent?

I can drive a stick shift on San Francisco hills and keep up with the taxis. I’m probably too proud of this.

2. Is there a song that really reminds you of your book?

Am I allowed to cheat and choose two?

I have full playlists for Anna and Bennett, but there are two songs—one from the mid-90s and one current tune—that will always remind me of these books.

Anna Begins by Counting Crows is a beautiful song about being surprised by someone and slowly, somewhat reluctantly, falling in love. Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood reminds me of writing Time After Time. The line, “Let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater,” is pretty perfect for a guy who can hold your hands and take you anywhere in the world you want to go.

3. What was the easiest thing about writing this book?

I enjoy writing family interactions, especially when the characters are close. When I was writing Time Between Us, the easiest scenes were the ones between Anna and her dad. In Time After Time, my favorites were the ones between Bennett and his sister, Brooke. I love the way they communicate. Even when the discussions are tense, there’s a lightness to their relationship. They banter. They joke. They completely get each other.

4. Is there a word you love to use?

Conundrum.

5. Any real or imaginary pets?

We have a dog and a cat. We’re about to get a bird for my son, so that will complete the food chain.
