Giveaway Interview SIDELINED by KENDRA HIGHLEY @EntangledTeen @KendraHighley

October 4, 2013 By Mary

After being pushed to excel her entire life, high school basketball star Genna Pierce is finally where she wants to be. University scouts are taking notice, her team is on its way to the state tourney, and Jake Butler, the hot boy she’s daydreamed about since ninth grade, is showing somedefinite interest. When he asks her out and their relationship takes off, Genna believes things can’t get better.

Then, it’s over.

A freak accident ends her career before it’s even begun. Her parents are fighting more than ever, her friends don’t understand what she’s going through, and she’s not sure who she is without basketball. And while he tries to be there for her, Genna doesn’t understand how Jake could ever want the broken version of the girl he fell for.

Her life in a tailspin, Genna turns to the only solace that eases her pain: Vicodin.

About Kendra:

Kendra C. Highley lives in north Texas with her husband and two children. She also serves as staff to two self-important and high-powered cats. This, according to the cats, is her most critical job. She believes in everyday magic, extraordinary love stories and the restorative powers of dark chocolate.

PLEASE WELCOME KENDRA TO BOOKHOUNDS!

1. Do you have a secret talent?

I’m not sure this is really a talent, but—like most moms—I can carry groceries, my laptop bag, a kid’s shoes, and someone’s backpack into the house from the car in one trip. My husband often says, “Today, on this episode of How Much Can Kendra Carry…” when I stagger into the kitchen, hauling nearly my bodyweight in stuff. There are days I wished I had more hands, though.

2. Is there a song that really reminds you of your book?

There are a couple, but “Us Against the World” by Coldplay (from Mylo Xyloto) helped write a pivotal scene in the book. I call it the “raindrop” scene, and the line about “roses in the rain” put a vision of Genna, soaked and covered in flower petals, into my head. The scene came out of that.

3. What was the easiest thing about writing this book?

Writing about my home state. I love Oklahoma and putting in locales that recalled my childhood (shout out to any Braum’s Dairy Store fans!) was so much fun.

4. Is there a word you love to use?

Oh, gosh. There are tons…but I tend to say “awesome” way too often. And when I write, I have a serious overuse of the word “just.” I really have to watch out for that one.

5. Any real or imaginary pets?

Two cats—Joey and Katie. Although, they’d probably say I was their pet, rather than the other way around. Truly, they rule the household. I’ve been chosen as their chief of staff, which means that I’ll be the favored human when our evil cat overlords take over the world. I take great pride in this.
