Forget everything you thought you knew about genies!
Azra has just turned sixteen, and overnight her body lengthens, her olive skin deepens, and her eyes glisten gold thanks to the brand-new silver bangle that locks around her wrist. As she always knew it would, her Jinn ancestry brings not just magical powers but the reality of a life of servitude, as her wish granting is controlled by a remote ruling class of Jinn known as the Afrit.
To the humans she lives among, she’s just the girl working at the snack bar at the beach, navigating the fryer and her first crush. But behind closed doors, she’s learning how to harness her powers and fulfill the obligations of her destiny.
Mentored by her mother and her Zar “sisters”, Azra discovers she may not be quite like the rest of her circle of female Jinn . . . and that her powers could endanger them all. As Azra uncovers the darker world of becoming Jinn, she realizes when genies and wishes are involved, there’s always a trick.

My debut novel, the Young Adult Contemporary Fantasy Becoming Jinn, is a modern spin on the traditional tale of wish-granting genies. It will be released on April 21, 2015, by Feiwel and Friends, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s. The sequel will follow in Spring 2016. I am represented by Lucy Carson of The Friedrich Agency.
Too much of my day involves chatting books, obsessing over The Vampire Diaries, and perfecting the art of efficient writing through Twitter. PLEASE WELCOME LORI TO BOOKHOUNDS YA
- What is on your nightstand?
A small leather jewelry box (small works as I’m not a big accessories girl), book four in the Song of Ice and Fire series, which I’m slowly working my way through, and the absolute coolest clock ever—a gift from my husband. - What author would you totally fan girl?
Rainbow Rowell. As a writer who likes to write with humor, I look at her as a role model. Her talent and mastery of character and storytelling have made me a total fangirl. I also love her ability to write both YA and adult and yet to keep a brand that is clearly hers and hers alone.
- What makes you cringe? As a former copyeditor, I have to say mistakes in public signs. That apostrophe s, the difference between “there” and “their” and “your” and “you’re” matter. Errors happen, but when it’s poster size or greater, it sure is glaring!
- Are you worried that your google history will get you into trouble? But only because it will out my level of “Internet research” to writing time ratio.
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?Obsessive, who me? *whistles*
Who told you? 😉
I am a dedicated plotter. I outline for three to four weeks before writing. I have outlines/synopses that are upwards of fifty to eighty pages. While things still change, I like having a blueprint to rely on as I’m writing. I know where to go. When I don’t, I find myself much more easily distracted as I stare into space thinking “what now?” If I wrote without an outline, it’d take me years to accomplish anything.

I am thinking you meant to ask about “Jinn” rather than “Love Lucy”, and my answer is that I am very intrigued.
LOL Beth — this time it wasn’t me! I am famous for those “copy” errors on rafflecopter. I let the tour coordinator know about it. Thank you!
Really enjoyed the Q&A! She’s a sou lmate with the distaste for copy editing issues on public signs Cringe worthy indeed! Looking forward to learning more about ‘genies/jinn’!
