Sage Czinski is trying really hard to be perfect. If she manages it, people won’t peer beyond the surface, or ask hard questions about her past. She’s learned to substitute causes for relationships, and it’s working just fine… until Shane Cavendish strolls into her math class. He’s a little antisocial, a lot beautiful, and everything she never knew she always wanted.
Shane Cavendish just wants to be left alone to play guitar and work on his music. He’s got heartbreak and loneliness in his rearview mirror, and this new school represents his last chance. He doesn’t expect to be happy; he only wants to graduate and move on. He never counted on a girl like Sage.
But love doesn’t mend all broken things, and sometimes life has to fall apart before it can be put back together again…

Excerpt:
When I walk past the music room, I hear something that stills me in my tracks. People push past; I’ve become a rock in the middle of a rushing stream, but I can’t move. Then someone shoves me from behind, not on purpose, but the result is the same. I slam into the lockers past the classroom and bounce. The underclassmen who were wrestling don’t even notice that my brain has stopped firing.
Shane Cavendish plays like it’s his reason for living.
I don’t write that on the Post-it, of course. That would just get him beaten up even harder. Instead I scrawl, You’re awesome on the guitar, because the jocks might think that’s cool and leave him the hell alone. It’s a long shot, as I don’t have any particular cred with their crew, but being a musician is pretty spectacular. I can’t breathe for how good—how remarkably talented—he is. And I suspect that if he found out anyone was paying attention, he’d stop playing.
Backtracking to his locker will make me late for class, but it’s worth it. I stick the note just below the vents, as I always do, but this time it feels weightier, more somehow, like this is a turning point. Shaking off the odd sensation, I dodge into Econ with a mumbled excuse. Sadly, it holds no weight with Mrs. Palmer. Unlike the male teachers, she isn’t impressed with talk of ‘female problems’, so I get my first detention of the year, only the second I’ve ever had.
Since tomorrow is Friday and I have standing plans with Ryan, I ask, “Can I just get it over with tonight?”
I calculate; school lets out at 2:45. An hour of sitting in silence, and I’m supposed to be at work at four. If I hurry, I can still make my shift at the Curly Q. Which sounds like a diner, but it’s actually a hair salon. I’m not qualified to do anything but wash hair, sweep up, and answer the phone, but it’s better than fast food. I work two afternoons a week from four to eight, which earns me spending money for the week. Since I’m under eighteen, I get paid fifty cents an hour less than an adult; that makes me a bargain. After detention ends, I’ll just need to ride hard to keep Mildred from yelling at me.
Mrs. Palmer glances up from scribbling down my doom. “Can you get a ride home?”
“Yeah.”
I’ve always got my bike out front, and the town is small enough that I can ride anywhere I need to go from school. This is the one positive aspect of living in a tiny berg like this, especially given my opinion of privately-owned fossil fuel burning vehicles, which covers nicely for my lingering fear.
MY THOUGHTS
Sage moved to a small farming community three years ago and changed everything about herself. She now tries to make at least one person smile each day by putting a post it with a postiive message on a locker in sparkly pen when she knows someone needs it most. She hasn’t had an easy life and moving in with her aunt has given her a new chance at life that she doesn’t want to mess up. Nicknamed “princess” because of her attitude, she has stayed away from friendships, except with Ryan, who she thinks is just friendly with her as a cover for another relationship that wouldn’t be viewed kindly by the jock bullies at school.
When a new boy, Shane, shows up and becomes the bullies’ punching bag, she tries to deflect them and when Ryan confesses that his other relationship was with an older woman, her world falls apart. Now divorced from her protective relationship with Ryan, she moves forward and sits with her Green World recycling group. She also drags Shane along with her to sit with freshman, sophmores and a senior. Of course, Shane has some secrets of his own and Sage thinks she understands exactly what is going on with him, but it is much worse than she imaged.
Sigh, these two are just perfect for each other, both with bad starts in life and are given a second chance at life and want to succeed. Shane has a love of music and in a small town, he becomes someone when he is seen playing at the local coffe house. He comes into his own through his talent and the bully gets his. I am not going to write about that situation because it would be too spoilery. This is a nicely done story that discusses some hard issues but not as gritty as Katie McGarry or Jennifer Echols. Parents: this is a pretty clean read with just a bit of language, some violence, and some allusions to sexual situations (a few kisses too!).

I’d want to be in a historical novel, I think…sometimes I wonder if I was born in the wrong time period!
I would love to be in one of those young adult novels, where they go on an epic road trip or traipse through Europe. I wish I had done more of that when I was younger
I would want to be in a fantasy YA with magic and dragons! I hope I’m not a scullery maid! Lol!
I would befriend Anne of Green Gables and enjoy our adventures together.
I would want to be in a contemporary YA novel, but a road trip one. Something fun that does not involve romance or serious issues.
I first read the Vampire Diaries when I was in high school and I feel In love with them! I would love to be a character like Elena! Also Buffy!
I don’t have a specific character, but I think it would be interesting to be a member of a royal family in a novel.
I would, of course, be the heroine with all kinds of nice looking suitors!! ( I know I am dreaming!!)
I would definitely be in a YA fantasy book. I wouldn’t want to be the lead character though. I would be the heroine’s best friend that fights along side her using magic to fight people that oppose her.
I’d love to be in a time travel ya novel, and of course, I’ll be time traveling to different parts of history and experiencing what people went through in a specific time era. That would be a great experience for my character in that novel. 🙂
I’m clumsy and I read a lot…so that’s probably what I would be doing! But if I got to choose a character to be, I would want to be like Lara Jean (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han), Jubilee Chase (This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner), or America Singer (The Selection by Kiera Cass). I love all of those characters because of how fiercely loyal they are to their friends and family, and I also love how each one shows a different form of female strength. They all have very different personalities, but they do have an emotional and internal strength in common that I really admire.
Thanks for the giveaway!
I would want to be in either a paranormal or fantasy ya book! 😀 I would be discovering how to fight and survive!

I’d definitely like to be in one of those time travel novels where you get to change the past and create an alternative history!
I would love to be in a PNR
I’d be a warrior in a sci-fi YA book or a companion of The Doctor 😉
I want to be in a fantasy-magical world where I can make or use magic whenever I want to. 🙂 Like Harry! Or maybe, I want to be a part of Middle Earth and join Frodo on his journey and meet lots and lots of elves!
I would definitely be in a fantasy novel! Maybe someone who could turn in to a dragon and have magic at my disposal and I would definitely have a great romance and have to save the world!
I’d be a young student traveling Europe and exploring different cultures.
I would want to be in a contemporary YA novel, something like Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld, where I’m journeying to find myself in my own writing (after writing an awesome fantasy book).
