It’s a fairy-tale nightmare . . .
One girl is kept in a room where every day the only food she’s given is a poisoned apple. Another is kept in a room covered in needles — and if she pricks her finger, she’ll die. Then there are the brother and sister kept in a cell that keeps getting hotter and hotter. . .
A sinister kidnapper is on the loose in Kate’s world. She’s not involved until one day she heads to her grandmother’s house in the woods — and finds her grandmother has also been taken. Already an outcast, Kate can’t get any help from the villagers who hate her. Only Jack, another outsider, will listen to what’s happened.
Then a princess is taken, and suddenly the king is paying attention — even though the girl’s stepmother would rather he didn’t. It’s up to Kate and Jack to track down the victims before an ever after arrives that’s far from happy.

PLEASE WELCOME ELIZABETH TO BOOKHOUNDS YA
- What is on your nightstand?
I’ve attached a photo of my glorious nightstand!
- What author would you totally fan girl?
In the past year, I’ve written embarrassingly fawning messages to E. Lockhart and Micol Ostow, as well as the poets Marie Howe, Gregory Pardlo and Ada Limon. If I met Christophe Pike in person, I’d be unable to speak. If I met Judy Blume, I’d be unable to breathe.
- What makes you cringe?
I’m weirdly, deathly afraid of birds. Parrots make me cringe. Adorable baby ducklings make me cringe. Eating chicken even makes me cringe.
- Are you worried that your google history will get you into trouble?
I’m just going to bank on the fact that everyone secretly searches topics like poisons and serial killers.
Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I obsessively plot out the first and last few chapters and then let myself wander a bit from the beginning to the end.

I am hooked! This book sounds amazing! I am also comforted that someone else is hiding from the internet police by pretending that everyone researches serial killers and related topics. Sure they do…Right? I keep hoping…and hiding…
