Description:
SOUND is the stand-alone companion to Alexandra Duncan’s acclaimed novel Salvage, a debut that internationally bestselling author Stephanie Perkins called “kick-ass, brilliant, feminist science fiction.” For fans of Beth Revis, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica.
As a child, Ava’s adopted sister Miyole watched her mother take to the stars, piloting her own ship from Earth to space making deliveries. Now a teen herself, Miyole is finally living her dream as a research assistant on her very first space voyage. If she plays her cards right, she could even be given permission to conduct her own research and experiments in her own habitat lab on the flight home. But when her ship saves a rover that has been viciously attacked by looters and kidnappers, Miyole—along with a rescued rover girl named Cassia—embarks on a mission to rescue Cassia’s abducted brother, and that changes the course of Miyole’s life forever.

This is my cat Loki. He is very cute, but kind of a jerk, just like his namesake.
This is my cat Pyewackett. He is named after one of the creatures in this 17th century woodcut. I caught him chewing on my toothbrush, so now it belongs to him.
PLEASE WELCOME ALEXANDRA TO BOOKHOUNDS YA
- What is on your nightstand?
Literally? A copy of Days of Blood and Starlight, by Laini Taylor, James Boswell’s London Journal, 1792-1793, which my husband and I are reading to each other, and approximately twenty-one earrings. On my metaphorical nightstand, I have N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season, and Valour and Vanity, by Mary Robinette Kowal.
- What author would you totally fan girl?
I would probably pass out if I met Ursula LeGuin or Nnedi Okorafor, so I don’t know if I would get a chance to fangirl them before the paramedics came to take me away. I’ve been told that my voice gets very high and excited when I meet someone I admire, and I know I start laughing way too much, so that’s probably a good thing. Past authors I have likely freaked out with my fangirling include Neil Gaiman, picture book author Kevin Henkes, Laini Taylor, and the psychologist Steven Pinker.
- What makes you cringe?
Slurping noises. My own voice on voicemail messages. When my cat pukes on the rug right before someone comes over to visit.
- Are you worried that your google history will get you into trouble?
Definitely. I’m sure the NSA is wondering why I’m looking up how much morphine is in a lethal dose and how to hotwire a Jeep. It’s for my third book, guys. I swear.
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I tend to do a rough outline of major plot points, but then draft more freely. My stories usually are more character-driven than plot-driven, and I find it difficult to plot out exactly how a character’s emotions or feelings are going to develop ahead of time. I like to put my characters in a situation, imagine how they would react to it, and then build from there. Ideally, the character’s emotional reaction will affect the plot, and vice versa. For instance, in Sound, Miyole has a fear of drowning that stems from a terrible experience she had as a child. When she’s confronted with a situation where she has to do a deep-water dive, she’s nervous and makes a mistake that affects how the plot plays out.
(Where the heck is my little heart emoji for that last answer?)

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR NEW BOOK AND THANKS FOR THE GIVEAWAY!
It is so cool to find that you are a normal person with normal-ish, freaky animals. You have a cat that occasionally pukes on your rug, I have a dog that seems to like to pee on my slippers these days. (gross, I know).
Thank you so much for sharing with us. It’s great to “meet” authors I admire.
