Beautiful Creatures meets The Raven Boys in the spellbinding second novel in the Heirs of Watson Island trilogy that “skillfully blends rich magic and folklore with adventure, sweeping romance, and hidden treasure” (Publishers Weekly, on Compulsion).
Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. Ghost-hunters hope to glimpse the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, and reporters chase rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. The chaos turns dangerous as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins. Because more is buried there than treasure.
A stranger filled with magic arrives at Watson’s Landing claiming that the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts—and the Colesworth curse—also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, the man convinces Barrie and Cassie to cast a spell there at midnight. But what he conjures may have deadly consequences.
While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for—Eight or herself. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe in this stunning addition to a series filled with “decadent settings, mysterious magic, and family histories rife with debauchery” (Kirkus Reviews, on Compulsion).

Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.
All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lives with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead—a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.
Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family’s twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

PLEASE WELCOME MARTINA TO BOOKHOUNDS
Thank you so, so much for having me! It’s an honor and a pleasure to visit with BookHounds again!
- What is on your nightstand?
As I am writing this, I am at the hotel in Farmville, VA where I’m staying two nights for the Virginia Children’s Book Festival. (Which is AMAZING). I have a copy of Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming, because I just heard her speak and she’s so inspiring. I’ve also got a stack of gothic novels for my panel with Anne Blackman tomorrow, and my iPad, which is queued up with the animated BRAVE movie, because I had two panels with the incredible Brenda Chapman who wrote and directed that film, and became the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Listening to her made me crave a Brave fix, so that’s my bedtime watching tonight. Oh, and a cup of tea.
Normally? My nightstand is a mix of books and small souvenirs that I or my kids picked up while traveling.
- What author would you totally fan?
Today, I totally fangirled over Kwame Alexander, Jacqueline Woodson, and Brenda Chapman. Previously? I’ve made an idiot of myself over Laini Taylor, Holly Black, and way too many other authors. I have no problem with movie stars, but authors I love make me dorky and tongue-tied.
- What makes you cringe?
Being dorky and tongue-tied.
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I have to know roughly where I’m going, but I’m learning to let the characters take the story where it needs to go and trust that they’ll take me somewhere more interesting than I would have taken us.
- When and where do you have time to write?
Everywhere whenever I can sneak it in. Traveling lately while on deadline has made me basically write wherever I can find a few minutes. It helps that I have a new project I’m dying to get to.
