ABOUT THE BOOK

GIRL LAST SEEN
Author: Heather Anastasiu & Anne Greenwood Brown
Release Date: March 1, 2016
Publisher: Albert Whitman & Co (AW Teen)
SYNOPSIS:

Kadence Mulligan’s star was rising. She and her best friend, Lauren DeSanto, watched their songs go viral on YouTube, then launched a solo career when a nasty throat infection paralyzed Lauren’s vocal chords. Everyone knows Lauren and Kadence had a major falling-out over Kady’s boyfriend. But Lauren knows how deceptive Kadence could be sometimes. And nobody believes Lauren when she claims she had nothing to do with the disappearance. Or the blood evidence…

As the town and local media condemns Lauren, she realizes the only way to clear her name is to discover the truth herself. Lauren slowly unravels the twisted life of Kadence Mulligan and finds there was more to her than she ever knew. But will she realize she’s unknowingly playing a part in an elaborate game to cover up a crime before it’s too late?

PRAISE

“Endlessly twisty, this deliberate head trip will keep readers guessing until the very end. The kind of dark, wild ride that begs to read in a single sitting.” Kirkus Reviews, January 1, 2016

“A sexy, fascinating, fast-paced, and darkly dynamic mystery for teens.” School Library Journal, January 2016
“Bold, intriguing, and full of surprises. It’s the kind of book that haunts you long after you put it down. I’ve read nothing like this before; a mystery to the very last page, defined by intense and tragic relationships, and warmed by the connections formed in a shared mission. I thoroughly enjoyed this.” Kristen Simmons, author of “Article 5” and “The Glass Arrow”

PLEASE WELCOME HEATHER TO BOOKHOUNDS YA

  1. What is on your nightstand?

Heather: My kindle, always! Currently reading a series of fairytale-based romances by Katy Regnery.

  1. What author would you totally fan?

Heather: Ooo, there’s a few that are always automatic buys for me – Colleen Hoover is probably the one I go ultimate fangirl over, then Mia Sheridan and Tillie Cole. After I finish any of their books, I grab everyone I know, in person and online, and am like, OH MY GOSH, have you read their new book??? and if the answer is no: What is wrong with you? Put down whatever you are doing and go read it THIS VERY SECOND!!!

  1. What makes you cringe?

Heather: Insta-love. I need to see some real development between the romance of my characters—I don’t want them to have TOTALLY fallen for each other by like, 1/3 of the way through the book—for me the fun is in watching a couple struggle and stumble as they make their way through the thorny pathway to a happily ever after.

  1. Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?

Heather: I used to be much more of an obsessive plotter than I am now. Now I really loosely plot things out. Like, I always know the end from the beginning, but I’ll generally only plot a scene or two ahead before I write it. In my head I’m working things out, and I’ll sit down every once and a while with my writing journal and write down some scenes that need to happen to structure a novel, but the day to day writing is very in the flow.

  1. Is there a word you love to use?

Heather:  Haha, great question. There are words I over-use, but not any that I consciously love to use, I don’t think. At least not intentionally. It’s always when I’m editing that I’ll catch whatever word standing out that I kept using and I’ll be like, what was with me repeatedly using the phrase ‘dark gaze’? I’m obsessed with describing people’s eyes, especially guys’ eyes, so I always have to watch myself there to make sure I’m not repetitive!

Also, if you have any pictures of your pet you would like to share, please attach them.  My readers love animals!

I don’t have a pet YET, but my son is obsessed with turtles and will get one in six months when he turns 12. He’s been campaigning to get one for about a year now, and turtle-related items started showing up on my favorite bookshelf—paintings, a sculpture he did, and drawings he and his friends have done. The box is another craft project where he puts any money he saves as part of his ‘turtle fund.’

PLEASE WELCOME ANNE TO BOOKHOUNDS YA

  1. What is on your nightstand?

Anne: a lamp, a notebook and pen for middle-of-the-night ideas, and probably dust. (I’ll have to get on that later.)

  1. What author would you totally fan?

Anne: It’s not a “would fan” situation, it’s more of a “been there, done that,” and the answer is Maggie Stiefvater. I can distinctly remember following her down a hall at a YA conference we were both speaking at (I was a panelist, she was the keynote).  I wanted so badly to introduce myself but realized all I had to say was, “Hi. I love you. I mean…your books. I love your books. I write, too.”  Gah! I quickly abandoned the hope of making a good impression and made a detour at the first restroom.

  1. What makes you cringe?

Anne: Unnatural, stiff dialogue. Sugary sweet people. Videos of eye surgeries.

  1. Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?

Anne: I would hesitate to use the word “obsessively,” but I am definitely a plotter. Without a strong outline with action points, my characters would just lie around in the sun and drink lemonade.

  1. Is there a word you love to use?

Anne: “Just.” I just love it! It pops up in just about every sentence I write, which is why I have to do a search for all my “justs” and get rid of just about every one.  Words I like and like to keep include: balm (“he was the balm to my broken heart”) and pinprick (“I sank deep into the dark water until the sun was nothing more than a pinprick of light”).
