About Life On Mars: A young space explorer is absolutely sure there is life to be found on Mars, so he sets off on a solitary mission, determined to prove the naysayers wrong. But when he gets there, equipped with a package of cupcakes for a snack, he sees nothing but a nearly barren planet. Finally, he spies a single flower and packs it away to take back to Earth as proof that there is indeed life on Mars. As he settles in for the journey home, he cracks open his cupcakes, only to discover that they’re all gone! The reader knows the secret: Unbeknownst to the explorer, a Martian has been wandering around the illustrations the whole time–and he got himself a delicious snack along the way.

MY THOUGHTS!

This is a wonderful story that packs a lot of punch into a few words and some stunning graphics.  A child decides that he needs to find out if there is life on Mars.  I really like the fact that the child is drawn to be either male or female and since there are no pronouns, it can easily be changed for a boy or a girl.  He (or She) brings a treat to share with whoever he finds.  There are hits and misses in finding what lives on Mars and some silly things happen.  The surprise at the end really caught me off guard.  I think parents are going to enjoy reading this out loud to toddlers and up since it is just so clever!

And you know, I just had to do this . . .

This sounds delightful and would be perfect for one of my Kid’s Korner posts!
