An ambitious novel with an engaging voice, a clever plot and some terrific writing. The New York Times Book Review
No one should be talking about the shocking twist ending. What we can talk about is . . . [Lockhart s] razor-sharp portrayal of a family for whom keeping up appearances is paramount and, ultimately, tragic. Chicago Tribune

PLEASE WELCOME E LOCKHART TO BOOKHOUNDS YA
- Even though this is BookHounds, we respect cats. Does your cat inspire your writing? What about the dog? (feel free to include pictures)
If you have read We Were Liars you know I like dogs, and I put them in many of my books. There is a darling Harlequin Great Dane in The Boyfriend Listand its sequels. His name is Polka Dot. But the truth is that I’m a cat person. My cat, Blizzard, is very unhelpful, however. All he does is look good. (photo attached)
- Since you are the object of fangirls everywhere, what author would you fan ?
I am a little obsessed with Helen Oyeyemi right now: Boy, Snow, Bird. And with Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni, whose latest is Before We Visit the Goddess, but I especially love the magic in Mistress of Spices.
- What makes you cringe?
Unkindness.
- What are you reading right now?
Jaclyn Moriarty’s A Tangle of Gold, Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime, Philip Roth’s Goodbye, Columbus.
- What was the last thing you googled?
The Brooklyn Book Festival YA author line-up. It’s a great festival in my hometown that happens every September. I haven’t been in the festival for a couple years, but I have a new book this fall (Genuine Fraud) so I’ll be running around discussing it.
