When Mona the Mouse stumbles across the wondrous world of the Heartwood Hotel in the middle of a storm, she desperately hopes they’ll let her stay. As it turns out, Mona is precisely the maid they need at the grandest hotel in Fernwood Forest, where animals come from far and wide for safety, luxury, and comfort. But the Heartwood Hotel is not all acorn souffl and soft moss-lined beds. Danger lurks, and as it approaches, Mona finds that this hotel is more than a warm place to spend the night. It might also be a home.
This delightfully enticing start of a new chapter book series tells a tale of friendship, courage, and community, with exquisite black-and-white illustrations throughout..

I’m very pleased to announce the Heartwood Hotel website!
http://www.heartwoodhotel.com/
The idea for this website originated a long time ago. My two series, the Magical Animal Adoption Agency and Heartwood Hotel, are set in places that mirror businesses in the real world, an animal adoption agency and a hotel. So I thought it would be fun to create websites that act as though my made-up places really do exist. (After all, they are very real in my head.)
I created a website for the Magical Animal Adoption Agency (www.magicalanimaladoptionagency.com) a few years ago now, with great success. Kids still email the agency frequently, wishing to adopt a magical animal. (I tell them that the magical animals cannot be adopted into the non-magical realm but they are free to virtually adopt one. They then send letters to the animal to be read aloud. Many kids have opted to do this!)
I was the kind of kid that would submerge myself in a book so thoroughly, that I would play-act the book every day with my friends. Creating these websites is similar—it’s making my story world even more tangible.
On the site, you can check out the staff that work at the hotel, and even apply to work there yourself by filling out the application form and emailing it to Mr. Heartwood.
If you want to stay at the Heartwood Hotel you can book a room, using the nifty booking button. (But don’t try if you’re a fox or wolf! Those animals aren’t allowed in the Heartwood, of course.)
Aren’t sure which room is best for you? That depends… on what kind of animal personality you have. Are you a chipmunk? A bird? Or maybe… a skunk? Take the quiz on the website to find out.
You can also see what’s on the current Heartwood menu, and make suggestions by creating your own menu. And, of course, there are a host of other fun activities, like a downloadable origami mini-suitcase to make, and a place to design your very own Heartwood room.
All the activities are collected together and available in the teacher’s guide, which is downloadable from the “books” page.
I truly hope lots of kids, parents and teachers, enjoy the Heartwood Hotel website after having read the books. Or while reading them, too!
Happy browsing!
Kallie
- According to the quiz, I’m a bird and would be staying in the Twig Suites!
