Jesobel Jones is bold and brash, the daughter of a hand model and a washed-up rock star. Jess sees no need to apologize for her rambling house, her imperfect family, her single status … or her weight. Jess is who she is. She makes her own cupcakes and she eats them, too. No regrets.
That is, until Own Clothes Day rolls around at school. Jess and her friends dedicate the requisite hours of planning to their outfits, their hair and their makeup for the one day they are free from school uniforms. But a wardrobe malfunction leaves Jess with a pair of leggings split open at the worst spot, and a mean girl calling her the one thing that’s never bothered her before: fat.
The encounter shakes Jess’s formerly iron-clad confidence, and she starts to wonder if she’s been just a little too comfortable in her own skin. When the boy of her dreams invites her to a party, she must decide whether to try to fit in for the first time in her life, or remain true to herself — whoever that really is.
Anna Mainwaring studied English Literature, which led to a career in banking. She left to travel and then to train as a teacher. Anna took part in NaNoWriMo in 2012, and after endless drafts, Rebel with a Cupcake was born. When not writing, Anna can be found walking up hills or in cafés. She lives in Cheshire, England, with her family, including a murderous gold fish called Moriarty.
- What is on your nightstand?
As you can see below, there is:
A digital radio as I like to listen to BBC Radio 4 as I go to sleep.
Moisteriser, lip balm and headache tablets.
A notebook for any ideas that come my way
Brienne of Tarth because… well, just because…
Two dragon egg crystals because you just never know
Whatever I’m reading at the moment. I’ve just finished The Hate U Give and Matt Killeen’s awesome debut ‘Orphan Monster Spy’. I adored both.
A little statue of a white cat. My beloved cat Purdie died a long time ago but I like to think of her sleeping next to me where she knows she’s safe and loved.
- What author would you totally fan? I was fortunate enough to win tickets to a special themed event at the University of Oxford to launch Philip Pullman’s latest book. Look for a very animated face in the bottom right-hand corner and imagine her saying ‘This is the best night of my life.’ That’s me.
Other than that, Angie Thomas. I’ve just finished That Hate You Give and was blow away by her talent. I went to a talk with her and she captivated the room with her charisma. So yes, if I met her, I think I would totally fangirl.
- What makes you cringe?
Myself. Pretty much all the time. I have two teenage daughters and am currently aiming to be the most embarrassing mother in the world. Yesterday I got Rihanna and Rita Ora mixed up. Apparently this is a terrible crime. I was mocked for some time.
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I have always gone with the flow. I love the magic of making up a scene and that moment when characters do something that you don’t expect. However enjoyable this approach is for me, it then becomes a nightmare when re-writing. So on my next project I am going to have a broad plan and then see where it takes me. I reserve the right to deviate from the plan though whenever it appeals!
- Is there a word you love to use?
I love the word ‘mellifluous’ but it’s hard to shoe-horn that into a draft. I overuse ‘smiled’, ‘just’ and ‘so’. I once had to take about 353 ‘just’s from a draft. It was just so annoying… You see my problem?
