PLEASE WELCOME TARYN BASHFORD TO BOOKHOUNDS ya!
Thanks so much for having me 😊
- What is on your nightstand?
A reading lamp, an analogue clock, an I LOVE YOU MUM trinket from my daughter, currently The Cruel Prince book, a large glass of water, a homemade bookmark from my son.
- What author would you totally fan?
Okay so I’m sure you said which authors would I totally fan, right? Because there’s always more than one. Jenny Han because she’s so funny and lively and I love her books. Maggie Stiefvater because she’s like this hurricane that enters a room and you can’t take your eyes off her – and her books are crazy good. Tahereh Mafi because she’s just – um – brilliant all round.
- What makes you cringe?
Snot. Sorry it does. Especially when it’s bubbling out of someone’s nose. I’d take changing a poo-ey nappy or cleaning up vomit over snot. It’s also why I don’t like sneezing myself, or watching others sneeze.
- Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
I’m a go with the flow kinda gal. I used to plot each point, but it felt more like I was writing a school essay and when I let myself just listen to the characters and asked myself what if questions as I went along, the story came out so much faster, more clearly, and it was way more exciting than I could’ve thought up in a plot planning session 😉
- Is there a word you love to use?
There’s a word I over-use – and it’s just. I put it into just about any sentence. I just have to weed it out of every manuscript. But no, there’s not just one world I love to use.
Taryn shared an adorable pic of her adorable dog!
Aw that’s so cool. We currently have a gorgeous mini foxie and he’s great company. He’s also the doggie co-star in one of my yet to be published novels, and in that book, he’s called Boomer. He’s pretty happy now that we’ve lost (they lived long lives) the fighting fish, the green tree frog, the three white mice, and the gecko. I’ve pasted and attached a photo of Jack a.k.a Boomer, for you to see.

Sixteen-year-old Harper was once a rising star on the tennis court–until her coach dropped her for being “mentally weak.” Without tennis, who is she? Her confidence at an all-time low, she secretly turns to her childhood friend, next-door neighbor Jacob–who also happens to be her sister’s very recent ex-boyfriend. If her sister finds out, it will mean a family war.
But when Harper is taken on by a new coach who wants her to train with Colt, a cold, defensive, brooding young tennis phenom, she hits the court all the harder, if only to prove Colt wrong. But as the two learn to become a team, Harper gets glimpses of the vulnerable boy beneath the surface, the boy who was deeply scarred by his family’s dark and scandalous past. The boy she could easily find herself falling for.
As she walks a fine line between Colt’s secrets, her forbidden love, and a game that demands nothing but the best, Harper must decide between her past and her future and between two boys who send her head spinning. Is the cost of winning the game worth losing everything?
A sizzling tennis romance perfect for the summer months, The Harper Effect, will be a grand slam for fans of Kasie West, Miranda Kinneally and Simone Ekeles.
Taryn lives the typical writer’s life alongside supportive husband, teen children, and characters from her latest book insisting they help make dinner. This can be disconcerting as Jacob is always sticking his fingers in the cheese sauce and Harper can’t cook.
Taryn’s been an English Literature Honours student, an advertising sales rep and a CEO of an internet company, but writing is her first love. The Harper Effect is her debut novel.

Aw thank you. It’s an exciting – and kind of scary – time 🙂
I love a good love triangle.
Me too, Melissa. This one’s almost a quadrangle if that’s possible 🙂
