Fovea Munson is nobody’s Igor. True, her parents own a cadaver lab where they perform surgeries on dead bodies. And yes, that makes her gross by association, at least according to everyone in seventh grade. And sure, Fovea’s stuck working at the lab now that her summer camp plans have fallen through. But she is by no means Dr. Frankenstein’s snuffling assistant!
That is, until three disembodied heads, left to thaw in the wet lab, start talking. To her. Out loud.
What seems like a nightmare, or bizarre hallucination, is not. Fovea is somebody’s Igor, all right. Three somebodies, actually. And they need a favor.
With a madcap sense of humor and a lot of heart (not to mention other body parts), this is a story about finding oneself, finding one’s friends, and embracing the moment.
Author of THE MORTIFICATION OF FOVEA MUNSON, June 2018, Disney-Hyperion. Barrel of Monkeys Company Member.
Fovea has seen more of the body than most 12-year-olds and when her parents insist that she serve as their receptionist for their cadaver lab, she really doesn’t want to tell her friends. The worst part is that her parents rely on morbid wordplay to entertain themselves. So far, the job is quite easy and she just has to clean up and keep away salespeople until one day, she hears voices coming from the lab when it should be quiet. Body parts shouldn’t talk, especially in the freezer.
When she goes into the cold storage room she is addressed by three talking heads, and no not the band, although, music is in the mix. Luke, Andy, and Mac are real characters and their banter is just so much fun but their biggest problem is that they want to be a barbershop QUARTET but they are missing the fourth. The story is a lot of fun and I love the premise. Fovea’s parents are just scattered enough to be believable and yet, this situation, even as crazy as it is, seems reasonable.
