My  inspiration:  Adventure,  danger,  and  a  thrilling  global  mission
by Trudi Trueit, author of the Explorer Academy series

As  a  writer,  Explorer  Academy  is  a  dream  come  true.  I  have  always  loved  mysteries  and  adventure  stories,  and  I  am  a  huge  Star  Trek  fan,  so  the  chance  to  create  a  science-based  fiction  series  about  family  secrets,  daring  expeditions,  and  codebreaking—how  could  I  resist?
For  some  time  I  have  wanted  to  write  a  reality-based  action-adventure  series  for  middle  graders,  but  I  had  a  problem:  How  do  you  send  characters  on  an  exciting  journey  when  they  have  to  be  in  school  all  day  and  doing  homework  every  night?  Explorer  Academy  was  the  perfect  solution.  The  explorers  travel  the  world  via  ship,  venturing  out  on  daring  missions  to  save  the  planet,  while  also  going  to  school,  doing  their  homework,  and  getting  to  bed  by  9:30!
In  The  Nebula  Secret,  training  starts  at  the  Academy’s  campus  in  Washington,  D.C.,  where  the  new  recruits  become  immersed  in  their  new  environment  and  are  soon  awed  by  the  CAVE  (Computer  Animated  Virtual  Experience),  which  simulates  real-world  scenarios  via  augmented  reality.  At  the  end  of  book  one,  the  students  set  sail  to  explore  the  world  aboard  the  classroom  ship,  Orion  (not  unlike  Captain  Kirk  and  crew  aboard  the  Starship  Enterprise!).  By  the  time  the  series  ends  in  book  seven,  readers  will  have  been  exposed  to  many  fascinating  people,  places,  and  cultures;  exciting  innovations  of  the  future;  and  important  issues  about  species  extinction,  habitat  loss,  climate  change,  scientific  responsibility,  and  human  morality.
My  inspiration  came  from  real  National  Geographic  explorers,  who  go  to  the  edge  to  make  a  difference:  the  biologist  putting  her  life  on  the  line  to  document  the  plight  of  rhinos,  the  underwater  photographer  who  takes  the  plunge  to  protect  our  ocean,  the  paleontologist  who  endures  harsh  conditions  to  uncover  new  dinosaur  species,  the  archaeologist  committed  to  ending  the  looting  of  ancient  treasures.
People  who  are  passionate  about  making  the  world  a  better  place—that’s  what  inspired  me,  and  what  I  hope  will  excite  young  readers!
