From the award-winning author of

The Great Trouble

comes a story of espionage, survival, and friendship during World War II.

Bertie Bradshaw never set out to become a spy. He never imagined traipsing around war-torn London, solving ciphers, practicing surveillance, and searching for a traitor to the Allied forces. He certainly never expected that a strong-willed American girl named Eleanor would play Watson to his Holmes (or Holmes to his Watson, depending on who you ask).

But when a young woman goes missing, leaving behind a coded notebook, Bertie is determined to solve the mystery. With the help of Eleanor and his friend David, a Jewish refugee--and, of course, his trusty pup, Little Roo--Bertie must decipher the notebook in time to stop a double agent from spilling the biggest secret of all to the Nazis.

From the author of The Great Trouble, this suspenseful WWII adventure reminds us that times of war call for bravery, brains and teamwork from even the most unlikely heroes.

Goodreads

I write picture books, nonfiction, and middle grade fiction. I love history and visiting schools to talk to young readers (Pre-K – 8 and sometimes high schools).
This book really hit home with me.  It follows Bertie, a young boy with his dog, Roo,  delivers messages for the local wardens and helps out when he can when the air raids of London during World War II.  Bertie’s soon to be friend, Eleanor, is an American Jew and searching for a friend.  The two connect when Bertie discovers the young woman’s notebook and the two, along with Bertie’s friend, David try to decipher it.
This is a fun-filled book for such a trying time in history. The chapters are all headed up with allusions to Sherlock Holmes and the story really moves quickly.    As the three work their spy craft, they keep things light for such a trying time. My mother-in-law was a young girl in London during these raids and this reminded me so much of the stories she would tell me about those times.  I really enjoyed this one and it is a great way to get children to feel real life history that comes alive.  There are wonderful footnotes that help guide you to the facts.

Definitely want to read this. My son likes history but doesn’t like to read, so maybe this would give him a little bit of encouragement to get those daily reading minutes in.
