Book Trailer:
INTERVIEW
1. What is on your nightstand?
The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz. Plus, paper and a pen for capturing late night inspirations.
2. What author would you totally fan?
R.A. Salvatore, author of the NYT best-selling Forgotten Realms fantasy series. I met Bob and artists who worked on his book covers. Super approachable and creative.
3. What makes you cringe?
Traditional TV news. I don’t feel tragedies, crime and Hollywood are what I consider news or important to my life. I wish there were a TV network called “Good News.”
4. Do you obsessively plot out each point or just go with the flow?
ABCs and 123s for Boys is driven by an overall big creative picture – engaging kids in learning the alphabet. I let creative ideas flow for each illustration and page. Later I dial into specific copy and revisions. I think there were 13 revisions. ABCs and 123s for Girls is taking the same path.
5. Is there a word you love to use?
“Thanks.” A word I love to hear is “dinnertime.” A word I dislike is “awesome.” But together, I’d gladly say, “Thanks for the awesome dinner.”
Look for my picture of baby birds in their nest. When we were cutting down a tree this week, we discovered this nest of baby robins. So we removed the branch with the nest and relocated it to a nearby tree. Later that day, the mother and father bird found the nest, and are taking great care of the babies.

Raising three energetic kids, zigzagging cross country on family vacations, and growing up in a typically crazy Catholic family have given Tom years of writing material.
The McLaughlin clan currently lives in a 100-year-old bungalow in the Midwest. When Tom’s not renovating or writing, he’s piloting the crew on another adventure. Or he’s simply in the backyard battling the dandelions and crabgrass. ABCs and 123s for Boys is his first book.

Hi Natalie,
This is the perfect Boys book… each letter features a different boy’s name and character. Both hardcover and softcover are available on Amazon — and I think you’ll love them. (We just received our copies yesterday.) The colors, letters and characters pop off the page. What fun.
