Broken into three short stories of poetry and petty crime, this charming chapter book will have young readers in search of a rhyme in no time. Book 1 in the Marty Frye series!

Marty Frye is not your ordinary sleuth. Marty Frye is a poet detective–he makes up rhymes as he solves small crimes. When his friend Emma’s diary is missing, Marty is on the case. When Katie’s flour is nowhere to be found, Marty tracks it down. And when the brand-new Action Chuck figures mysteriously vanish from the toy store, Marty unravels the mystery. Will there ever be a case too hard for Marty to solve? Or a word too impossible to rhyme?

Broken into three short stories of poetry and petty crime, this charming chapter book will have young readers in search of a rhyme in no time.

A Christy Ottaviano Book

In this charming early reader, Marty solves three mysteries in short order.  He helps Emma find her diary, finds a missing box of action figures for the local toy store and then his sister find the missing flour.  Each story is illustrated with wonderful graphics and written in rhymes to make those new words easier to sound out.  This is the perfect book to get those early readers into chapter books without kids realizing it. I loved it when Marty said, ” I might have time for one more crime.”  I would say that these can easily be broken up into the three parts of stories for kids that need extra time.

Title: MARTY FRYE PRIVATE EYE AND THE CASE OF THE STOLEN POODLE
Author: Janet Tashjian
Pub. Date: June 27, 2017
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)
Formats: Hardcover, Paperback
Pages: 96
Find it: Amazon, B&N,  TBD, Goodreads

In this new collection of mysteries from bestselling author-illustrator team Janet Tashjian and Laurie Keller, everyone’s favorite poet detective is back in action. When the school nurse’s equipment is stolen, Marty tracks it down. When special candy disappears from the store, Marty finds the culprit. And most importantly, when a friend’s poodle goes missing, Marty comes to the rescue. But can he still manage to make up rhymes while he solves new crimes?

Broken into three short stories, this is an ideal stepping stone to longer chapter books. Young readers will be off in search of a rhyme in no time.

Marty is back on the case, this time he solves three more cases in quick order with his now famous rhymes.  First, he must find the missing tongue depressors from the school nurse, next up is stolen candy and last a poodle that might have escaped just to watch television.  This is quite possibly the best line in the book:  “Put down your quiche– I found your dog’s leash!”  The story is filled with adorable quotes like that and illustrations the work perfectly so if a child is having trouble with a word, there is an image that might help them out.  This is a wonderful series that will have your early reader moving on to chapter books.
