For fans of television shows Black Mirror and Westworld, this compelling, mind-bending novel is a twisted look into the future, exploring how far we will go to remake ourselves into the perfect human specimen and what it means to be human at all.
Set in our world, spanning the near to distant futures, Stronger, Faster, and More Beautiful is a novel made up of six interconnected stories that ask how far we will go to remake ourselves into the perfect human specimens, and how hard that will push the definition of “human.”
This extraordinary work explores the amazing possibilities of genetic manipulation and life extension, as well as the ethical quandaries that will arise with these advances. The results range from the heavenly to the monstrous. Deeply thoughtful, poignant, horrifying, and action-packed, Arwen Elys Dayton’s Stronger, Faster, and More Beautiful is groundbreaking in both form and substance.

This book of six, easy to read vignettes reminded me so much of Black Mirror. I am a huge fan of that television show and just like the show, this book creeped me out a bit. It is told in six parts from different narrators with different points of view but they are all from the same world, even if that world isn’t ours. Everything on the surface seems like the earth we know, but then some quirk occurs and you realize you are not in the same world as home. All of these stories would be at home on that show.
ARGHH – I don’t’ want to ruin any of the stories for anyone but they deal in some way or another with the manipulation of the human body, either through robotics, genetic mutation and the incorporation of genetically enhanced robotics into someone’s body. Here are a few examples: Evan must rely on his twin’s organs in order to survive and deal with this issues that she is going to die, so he might as well live. Cryotherapy saves a person’s body until their disease can be cured. And I think my favorite, which reminded me of Cinder by Marissa Meyer is Milla, who has her body rebuilt after a car accident and now is more machine than human and the consquences that come from that.
