What if Ariel had never defeated Ursula?
It’s been five years since the infamous sea witch defeated the little mermaid… and took King Triton’s life in the process. Ariel is now the voiceless queen of Atlantica, while Ursula runs Prince Eric’s kingdom on land. But when Ariel discovers that her father might still be alive, she finds herself returning to a world—and a prince—she never imagined she would see again.

After the sort of introverted childhood you would expect from a writer, Liz earned a degree in Egyptology at Brown University and then promptly spent the next ten years producing video games. Finally she caved into fate and wrote Snow and Rx under the name Tracy Lynn, followed by The Nine Lives of Chloe King series under her real name, because by then the assassins hunting her were all dead. She also has short stories in Geektastic and Who Done It and a new series of reimagined fairy tales coming out, starting with A Whole New World—a retelling of Aladdin.
She lives in Brooklyn with a husband, two children, a cat, a part-time dog, three fish and five coffee trees she insists will start producing beans any day. You can email her at me@lizbraswell.com.
My Thoughts
Ariel has lost her voice and her prince since Ursula won and now controls Eric’s land kingdom while she rules Atlantica. This isn’t the fairytale you know and love but the darker side of loss. It is now five years after the battle and Ariel is defeated, King Triton has taken her place as Ursula’s captive and now disguised as Princess Vanessa goes on to marry Eric. Everything is ripped to shreds from the happy ending that is the Little Mermaid.
Of course, the gang is there to help Ariel along in this new quest to rescue her father and elements of the original movie pop up and will have you somewhat singing along. The best part is that we see another dimension of Eric. He is a more fully formed character in this retelling. While the ending is not what I expected, it works.
